"I returned to wrestling sometime post-pipe bomb during “The Summer of Punk” in 2011. I had checked out of wrestling around the time WCW folded and was sold to Vince McMahon–setting up “The Invasion” and the Pepsi plunge of interest in professional wrestling shortly thereafter. It’s very easy to compartmentalize wrestling into WWE and well, uh, so, yep, anyone? Vince McMahon/WWE is “wrestling” the way Nintendo is “video games” to your parents. They get the hooks in early.
But in the last year it seems that there may finally (yes, finally) be a Sony or at least Dreamcast Era Sega gunning for that number two spot. If WWE is the undisputed (16 German Suplexing) Heavyweight Champ, could the tag team of Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Ring of Honor and the biggest promotion outside of the United States, “New Japan Pro Wrestling,” be Intercontinental Champs? Or maybe “Survivor” producer Mark Burnett and “Sin City 2″ director Robert Rodriguez can make lucha libre powerhouse AAA (Asistencia Asesoría y Administración) the biggest game in the states? And what is Billy Corgan doing….”
